Christingle Service

The children in Year 3 told the rest of the school all about Christingle during a special assembly on Wednesday 3rd December. All the children sang Christmas carols, and Reverend. Barnshaw talked to the children about the importance of Christingle and how we should all share and look after each other. The children in Year 3 then told everyone about the Christingle and what the different parts mean, such as the ribbon, the orange, the 4 sticks and the sweets, they even told us the story of the first Christingle and Bishop John de Watteville. Children in Year 6 then read the Christmas Story whilst Silent Night played in the background. At the end of the assembly we said prayers, and then lit our Christingles. Mr. Mellor spoke to the children afterwards and they said they learnt a lot and it was really nice to think about other people and how important Christmas is to everyone.

Science visit - The Gross Lab & From Chew to the Poo!!!

We were lucky enough to have two visitors from Eureka! in Halifax on Monday 1st December.

The children in Y1, Y2 and Y3 spent the morning in The Gross Lab. This was where the children explored the more 'ickier' (but very important) side of the Human Body. 'Grossology' is the Science of really gross things and during the show the children became grossologists - someone who studies really gross things. They looked at what happens when you cut yourself, what saliva is for, why we burp (and poo) as well as making fake scabs, poo, snot and sick! The children had a fantastic time and could remember some great gross scientific facts.

In the afternoon it was Y4, Y5 and Y6's turn. They looked at the journey a peanut butter and banana sandwich takes from the moment it is eaten to the moment it leaves the body. Through a series of interactive activities the children found out how saliva in the mouth breaks down the food in order for it to be swallowed, how our bodies retain the minerals and vitamins the body needs and more amusingly how it gets rid of the bits it doesn't need as waste.

Overall the day was a brilliant success with the children learning many facts in an amusing, interactive way. All the children who took part are now fully qualified GROSSOLOGISTS!!!

Worm Charming

The children took part in a Worm Charming competion at school, which was inspired by Mrs. Holloway's Star of the Week award a couple of weeks ago.

In rather blustery conditions the children were given a 3m by 3m plot of land and had to use different methods to 'charm' the works to the surface.

There were many interesting techniques such as jumping up and down, banging the grass with sticks, playing the surface like bongo jumps and even singing to the worms!

Mr. Mellor said it was lots of fun and the children had a great time working together to devise interesting ways to charm the worms!

Fire Service Visit to Y6

The Fire Service came in to inform the children all about safety. This is really important at this time of the year, with Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night taking place. The children were shown a PowerPoint presentation and were treated to a quiz at the end of it.
